Chapter 23

Allegra

Sophia sits across from me in a crowded Center City coffee shop. The music’s loud and I have to lean in close to hear anything she’s saying, which isn’t really much since she can barely even make eye contact. I’m sore between my legs, basically throbbing after putting most of the couches in the living room to good use, and it’s like waking up from a very long dream.

A dream in which I spent the morning having sex with Gian Rossi.

I want to tell Soph all about it, but the vibes are all wrong. She swirls her cold brew, sips from the straw, and does everything but make eye contact.

“Uh, thanks for meeting me here,” I say, feeling so uncomfortable I could die. I don’t know what happened but this is all wrong. I’ve never been like this with Sophia before, but it’s like she’s a totally different person.

“Sure.” She doesn’t elaborate. Just, sure. One-word answers are all I can get from her right now.

“How are things back home?”

“Fine.”

“Did Dad say anything else about me and Gian?”

“No.”

“And how are you holding up?”

“Good.”

“Soph, I swear to god, if you keep acting like a sullen teenager and give me another one-word answer, I’m going to scream.”

A little smile quirks her lips. “Really?”

“Please, just tell me what’s up.” I smile back at her, but the brief moment passes and she goes back to looking at her drink like it’s the most interesting thing she’s ever seen.

“I’m not supposed to be here, okay?”

The words make me sit up straight. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“Your dad made this whole pronouncement thing. Basically, you’re ex-communicated, and nobody in the family is supposed to talk to you.”

My eyes widen. I knew he was mad, but to ban everyone else from even talking to me? That’s so much worse than I would’ve guessed. “But you’re here.”

“Yeah, I know, and I really shouldn’t be.”

“He can’t do that. He’s not the freaking pope.”

“He’s the Don, it’s even worse.” She speaks too loudly and has to look around to make sure nobody’s listening before leaning forward again. “You know how it is, Allegra. If your dad says something, we’re all supposed to listen. No exceptions.”

“You’re my cousin. I’m his daughter. He can’t just… he can’t erase that.”

“He’s pissed. He’s hurt. He thinks you betrayed him again.”

“I married a stupid Rossi like he wanted.”

“Yeah, but you ran away once, and you defied by him marrying the wrong brother.”

“Why are you defending him?”

“Because I’m kind of pissed too.”

I sit back, surprised at her anger. She’s glaring at me, mouth pressed tight together. Then she looks away and has to take a couple of deep breaths to calm down.

Sophia’s always been the strong one. I don’t remember her ever losing her temper before, and it’s strange, seeing her sitting across from me and seething. I don’t understand it. I’m trying to make this girl fit in with the image I have of her in my head, but there’s a disconnect somewhere.

“Why?” I ask, desperate to understand.
